let's take a live look at downtown san jose. the sun coming up in the distant horizon as folks are making their way to work. how will they be greeted in this postholiday atmosphere? >> with a smile if they're waking up with us, each and every day, no matter how bitter the cold is or how bad the air quality is, we have a little bit of both for today. if you don't mind cold temperatures, you can handle the way it is. we might get close to 80 degrees mid week in portions of the south bay as well. for this morning, i want to draw your attention to the temperatures because they've actually climbed. we're now at 38 degrees in san jose getting a little more wind at this point. when we get that mixing, your temperatures tend to come up. these are bearable numbers with the exception of the north bay. as per usual, very chilly conditions out there. i want to show you where we usually average this time of year and where we're headed as we head through the next couple days. the average is 58 degrees on the peninsula. today 66 degrees. tomor

it's in san jose another dry day. on the right side of the screen is what it look like early on the road to the sierra. nbc bay area's chief meteorologist jeff ranieri joins us now with a look at the drought conditions. hopefully we're going to get a little bit of good news. >> we have seen some improvement here. the latest drought monitor will show again some marked improvement in northern california. what we have done in this map is taken it back to june where that drought is the worst across northern california. you can see most of the state under exceptional levels of drought. now to the current, where we have had some rainfall in september, october, november and december. and you can see a good section here of northern california now under extreme drought. so that's a little bit of improvement. but really some of the most improvement has been in marin, san francisco, and also san mateo county. now at the moderate drought level. so some good news there. we can attribute this good news to our drought. obviously, we

still 57 in san francisco. 54 in san jose. and we should be mostly fog-free. you see 54 currently in san jose. san francisco, 57 degrees. and 54 for oakland. seeing overcast skies coming in from the south, which that's a little bit of a problem. if you look towards jupiter, you have the viewing of the asteroid 2004 bl 86 which is viewing if you happen to have nice binoculars. but cloud cover could be a problem. the clouds coming up out of the south. some breaks out there if you're watching us around the trivalley or out towards napa county might be able to see that to the east. further south, a little deeper moisture coming up along the central coast. as this line moves to the bay area it's going to weaken. but it may hold together long enough to give us the last potential for rain for the rest of the month. the time frame will be a little bit after midnight tonight, down around the santa cruz mountains. during the day tomorrow south bay, mid afternoon, could see a few showers. but the issue here is what rain that does fall all the computer models not showing
